A Hero's Defeat

Even the hero can be defeated. That was the black points of Chong Wei’s career. During the 2012 Thomas Cup on 20th to 27th of May at Wuhan China, Chong Wei tragically suffered from an early injury at his ankle. During the match with Peter Gate, he accidently sprains his ankle at the same place of his previous injury. The wound become worst yet fortunately he does not require the ankle surgery. However, he must take the time for resting for approximately four weeks to completely heal.

As the top singles, Lee just played four minutes against his old rival Peter Gade with a 2-1 leading in the first set. When the 29-year-old was retrieving the shuttle at the baseline, he strained the right ankle seriously and lied down the court with a grimace.
"His ankle is so swollen. He needs further checks to see the depth of the injury. We have decided that he would not play in the Thomas Cup Finals. We want him to have enough rest before the Olympic Games in London " said Rashid Sidek, the national singles chief coach of Malaysia.
After Lee decided to retire, Gade approached him to shake hands and gave a comforting hug to the disappointing man.
"This is not the way that I wanted to win, I knew the seriousness of his injury. I feel so sorry for him. I wish he will get well as soon as possible and recover rapidly," said Gade.
After sweeping South Africa in the first group match 5-0, Lee said that the target of Malaysia in this tournament is to reach at least the last four. However, this unfortunate injury is casting a shadow on the prospect of Malaysia.
"Lee's injury is a big loss to us, but we still will do the best for the rest of the competition," added Sidek.
